Palmengarten, Frankfurt
Feb 14 , 2012
Looking to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Frankfurt? Visit the city’s largest botanical garden: Palmengarten. Spread out over 50 acres, the Palmengarten features both antique and modern greenhouses housing an array of plant varieties from all over the world.
Established in 1871 by landscape gardener Heinrich Siesmayer, the Palmengarten is one of Germany’s largest and best-loved botanical gardens. Featuring several enormous antique and modern greenhouses, the Palmengarten is home to palm trees, tropical, and sub-tropical plants in eight different biotopes, including desert, rainforest, monsoon jungle, savannah, and mangrove.
Multiple greenhouses on the property house a wide variety of plants, including palm trees, tropical flowers and more. In the center of the park, is the 650 square foot (200 square meter) flower house, housing a sea of blooming flowers year round. In addition to the many greenhouse plants, visitors can explore the beautiful gardens located outside which include a rose garden and a rock garden.
You can either explore the park grounds on foot, along charming paths, or on the small park railway—sure to delight kids of all ages. If you're visiting in June, don’t miss the Rose and Light festival.
Pretty much anything you do in Germany will get you in the mood for a stein or two, and visiting the garden is no different. Stop into one of the many bars or beer halls to wash away that dry mouth.
