The Top 10 Things to do in Frankfurt

Feb 14 , 2012

Frankfurt is home to the European Central Bank, the German Federal Bank, and one of the world’s busiest airports. However, this lively bustling town also features a wealth of medieval history, culture, green space, and a variety of fun things to do and see.

1. Romer

One of the city’s most important landmarks, the Romer has housed Frankfurt’s city hall for 600 years and sits on the city’s central square, the Romerberg, in old town. Mostly destroyed in bombings during World War II (along with many buildings in downtown Frankfurt), the Romer was restored to its former glory in 1955.

2. St Bartholomew’s Imperial Cathedral

Dominating the city skyline, St. Bartholomew’s is Frankfurt’s largest cathedral. From April through May, visitors can climb the gothic tower for a spectacular panoramic view of the city.

3. Goethe House and Goethe Museum

This museum dedicated to Frankfurt’s native son, the celebrated writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, is a must-see for anyone wanting to experience how the wealthy German intelligentsia lived in the 18th century. Next door to Goethe’s childhood home is a museum featuring his collection of paintings and manuscripts.

4. Boat Tour of the Main River

If you’re looking for a more relaxing thing to do in Frankfurt, hop on a boat for a short tour or a long cruise on the Rhine and Main rivers. The main dock is located just steps from the Romer.

5. Old Sachsenhausen

This old neighborhood is full of charm. Stroll the cobblestone streets, enjoy a glass of apple wine and a fresh pretzel, and watch out for the Spitting Lady fountain—she might just catch you off guard!

6. Hop aboard the Ebbelwei Express

This ride on a historic city tram passes by many of Frankfurt’s sights. The ticket price also includes a pint of apple wine, so be prepared for a festive atmosphere.

7. Hochst Old Town

If you’re looking to escape the busy city, take a trip back in time to Hoschst Old Town, located in a Western Frankfurt suburb.  A quaint, well-preserved medieval town, Hochst is home to a castle built between the 13th and 16th centuries.

8. MMK Museum of Modern Art

Featuring over 4,5000 works of art from the 60s’ to today, the MMK is a fun thing to do for an art lover. The museum, completed in 1991, is a stunning example of post-modern architecture.

9. Old Opera House (Alt Oper)

Even if you don’t plan on catching a performance, a tour of the magnificent Old Opera House (completed in 1880) is well worth your time.

10. Shop the Zeil

Frankfurt’s Fifth Avenue, The Zeil is a wide pedestrian boulevard lined with malls and brand name stores.

One of the best parts about going through the city, is being able to sample all of the delicious German food
